I felt the same way about connecting with people in Perú through food, making sopa a la criolla and ensalada rusa with my host mom and our empleada and cooking lomo saltado with my boyfriend's family. I'll never forget that. Obviously there is regional variation as you mentioned, because I don't recognize some of what you've written about, but I can say I remember papas a la huancaina - absolutely hated it - and chicha morada - I actually thought that was quite good, I can't believe you LOATHE it! Funny. I know that what I'm experiencing right now - coming to England from the United States to live - is way different from what you're going through in Perú. You're not only getting accustomed to new food and a slew of other novel daily customs, but you're doing it as a Peace Corps volunteer. But, I have to say that even as a grad student in the UK, there are some things I've found to be very different, and even though they may be small, they can really affect how you feel. Namely for me, this is also in the realm of la comida tipica, especially here, as an avid coffee drinker used to tons of half and half in every cup I drink, to only find milk. Terrible! But hey, I remember the constant question - do you like Peruvian food? What do you like most? I'm empathizing as I type this!Meggie Katehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10741744148391584354noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5291274126573951556.post-69239493812671385262011-10-24T11:29:10.388-05:002011-10-24T11:29:10.388-05:00Hi Amanda, I am currently a freshman at St. John F...Hi Amanda, I am currently a freshman at St. John Fisher College in Rochester, NY and we are studying the Peace Corps.
